Tavistock’s roots are in a kind of institutional approach—think group psychology, systems thinking, and a lot of influence from early psychoanalytic theory. And that’s where the idea of dreams being these fixed symbols or diagnostic tools really comes from.
Now, the thing is, that approach tends to flatten dreams down into something that can be easily categorized or managed. It’s great for certain institutional settings, but it doesn’t leave a lot of room for the unique, living resonance that each dream can have. And that’s exactly what we’re doing differently here.
